Ghanaians celebrate Independence Anniversary In Washington DC

Ghanaians in the Washington metro area under the auspices of the Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA) marked the 62nd independence celebration of Ghana on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at the plush La Fontaine Bleau event center in Lanham.
The aim of this event was not only to celebrate but to raise funds to provide beds to hospitals in Ghana.

The chairman of COGA, Mr. Henry Adu called on all Ghanaians to join hands to help put Ghana where it should be. He continued to point that we can start this by joining the various associations that belong to COGA and contribute our quota to national development.

He appealed to those working in the health sector to keep an eye on beds that may be marked for replacement for COGA to get this information and get them shipped to Ghana.

Ghanaians in Georgia celebrate Ghana’s independence day

Ghanaians in Georgia celebrated Ghana’s 62nd Independence in grand style at the Hyatt Regency Perimeter at Villa Christina on March 9, 2019.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Sustainable Progress which was chosen to highlight the continued support for projects in Ghana that are initiated by member Associations of the Ghanaian Community in Georgia.

In recognition of the work that the Ghanaian community in Georgia, the Mayor of Macon-Bibb County in Georgia declared Saturday March 9, 2019 Ghana day in Macon.

Howard Business School Students Travel To Ghana As Global Business Consultants

Each year a group of students at Howard University School of Business travel abroad to put their classroom instruction to work as international business consultants to companies across the world.

Twelve students enrolled in the Global Trilateral MBA (GTMBA) program at Howard University began their travel to Accra, Ghana on Friday, March 8 for a week-long, immersive, global experience working as business consultants to two Ghanaian companies, including Chocolate Clothes, a Ghanaian fashion company whose Founder and CEO, Kwaku Bediako, has designed for international and American stars alike. .

“The mission of our program is to connect students at multiple institutions through a consulting project that allows them to work side by side as global business consultants,” says Curtis Kidd Telemaque, Ph.D., adjunct faculty member for Howard University School of Businessand one of two faculty members accompanying the students to Ghana.

USA puts visa restrictions on Ghana over lack of cooperation

The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Ghana for a “lack of cooperation in accepting their nationals ordered removed from the United States.”

“Ghana has failed to live up to its obligations under international law to accept the return of its nationals ordered removed from the United States,” Kirstjen Nielsen, the Secretary of Homeland Security, outlined.

“As a result, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has ordered consular officers in Ghana to implement visa restrictions on certain categories of visa applicants.

Without an appropriate response from Ghana, the scope of these sanctions may be expanded to a wider population,” a statement released by the US Department of Homeland Security read.

African-American business delegation visits Ghanaian Osu community

A 16-MEMBER Black American business delegation arrived last Wednesday to a rousing traditional welcome by the Osu Traditional Stool.

The delegation was received by the Osu Alata Mantse, Nii Kwabena Bonne V, on behalf of the Osu Traditional Council.

Welcoming the delegation, Nii Bonne V said he believed that the business executives were coming back to their homeland 400 years after their ancestors had gone into captivity abroad.

The delegation is in the country at the invitation of the Ghana International Chamber of Commerce and Yoks Investments Ltd, a local private company.

Led by a business strategist and the President of the National Black MBA Association, Mr Jesse Tyson, the delegation is in the country to reconnect with their roots as part of the Year of Return.

The visit is also to afford the delegation the opportunity to explore possibilities and opportunities to connect with local businesses and also enter into partnerships with local businesses.

Ghanaian-American CJ Sapong joins MLS club Chicago Fire

The Chicago based club have announced the signing of the deadly goal poacher ahead of the new Major League Soccer season.

American-born of Ghanaian descent Charles ‘CJ’ Nana Kwabena Sapong has completed his move to MLS side Chicago Fire in the ongoing transfer window.

The 30-year-old has joined the Fire club for the 2019 season around a transfer fee of $200,000 with an option of renewal.He featured for Philadelphia Union last season where he netted four goals with three assists in 33 appearances.

“We also believe that he will increase our scoring capabilities. We’re looking forward to working with him this season.”

He was born to Ghanaian parents in USA.

Party faithfuls in US congratulate Mahama over election as flag bearer of Ghana’s NDC

Ghanaians in the National Democratic Congress executives in the USA have congratulated John Mahama successful election as the flag bearer of the party.

The executives assured John Mahama a hundred percent support to ensure that wins power come 2020.

This comes after John Mahama polled 213,487 votes representing 95.23 percent of the total valid votes cast with the other six contenders managing with about 4 percent.

In a press statement, the executives said

“The NDC party has demonstrated civility and maturity in the face of all planned attempts to subvert and throw this election into disarray by the saboteurs who do not want anything good for the NDC.  The NDC USA stands prepared to work, campaign as hard as we can in aiding the NDC win victory in 2020.The future of our country looks brighter in the hands of H.E John Dramani Mahama, who has consistently demonstrated the knowledge and experience required to lead Ghana to prosperity”.

Ten African companies to feature at New York’s COTERIE

Ten women-owned businesses from Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya will next week attend COTERIE, one of the United States’ top fashion trade shows, with support from the International Trade Centre’s SheTrades initiative.

Taking place at the Javits Center, New York City, on 25 – 27 February, COTERIE provides an opportunity for the brands to showcase their collections and connect with international buyers.

All ten companies are part of SheTrades in the Commonwealth Programme, funded by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID).

In 2018, SheTrades sponsored a delegation of 9 brands from Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria to attend the fall edition of COTERIE, which led to meetings with 100 buyers and secured US $495,000 USD in trade leads.

One of the participating companies was Afrodesiac, a Ghanaian company that has seen tremendous success following its attendance at COTERIE.

Ghana-born power executive views heritage from both sides of the Atlantic

With an easygoing smile, Duke Energy executive Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe navigates effortlessly between the worlds of his parents and his children.

Ghartey-Tagoe, whose first name is pronounced “kojo,” grew up in Ghana on the west coast of Africa, the son of a renowned national television journalist.

His home nation won independence from the British on March 6, 1957, just six years before his own birth. For his three daughters, Independence Day is the Fourth of July.

One of his few regrets: Having traveled only once as a family with his wife, Phyllis, and all his girls to visit their parents and extended family in Africa. He met Phyllis in Washington D.C., but they are from the same part of Ghana.

“People who don’t know each other tend to fear each other,” he says. “And once you get to know them, you tend to find out there is nothing to fear and they are very much like you. They have families like you, they love their kids like you do.”

The 55-year-old power executive has risen quickly in corporate America since graduating from Duke University law school in 1988. He practiced privately in Washington, D.C., and Virginia for 14 years, mastering federal and state utility law and representing water companies, power companies, gas companies and phone companies before joining Duke Energy in 2002.

President Akufo-Addo leads fund-raiser in Washington to build National Cathedral in Ghana

Ghanaian President Akufo-Addo has called for support to construct the National Cathedral of Ghana.

He made the call on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC.

Prior to the launch of fundraising for the National Cathedral of Ghana, on December 28, 2018, the President made a personal donation of $100,000, a demonstration of his commitment towards the building of the Cathedral.

The National Cathedral of Ghana when constructed will have an auditorium with a seating capacity of 5,000 and with its chapels and baptistery.

Richard Commey made his second crack at the vacant IBF lightweight title count, claiming his first world title with a second round stoppage of Isa Chaniev. in a figh held at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

Ghana’s Richard Commey (28-2, 25 KOs) became the IBF lightweight champion with a sensational performance against Isa Chaniev (13-2, 6 KOs), utterly demolishing him in two rounds.

Commey (28-2, 25 KO) tore through Chaniev (13-2, 6 KO), dropping him late in the first round on a monster right hand. As Commey went to end things before the bell could sound to end the frame, he tripped, which may have been all that saved Chaniev at that point. Ghana and Philadelphia Union striker David Accam married Black Queens forward Florence Dadson in a traditional ceremony held in Cape Coast. Ghana

The duo, who reportedly began their relationship not long ago, took many by surprise after pictures of their marriage flooded social media. The marriage took place at the start of the New Year.  Both footballers are based in the United States of America and had been dating for about a year.

The American Dream is said to be dying, but one immigrant from Ghana rejects this idea. Stephen Osei immigrated to the United States in the late 1970s from Kumasi, Ghana, in pursuit of a better life for him and his family.

Now an American citizen, he describes his difficult story in his book, “I Love America” and outlines how anyone in the United States can succeed if they try.

“The fact you are born poor — this doesn’t mean you grow up to be poor,” he explains in an interview with The Daily Caller.

Music Professor Receives Prestigious International Fellowship

Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship supports George Dor’s work with Nigerian university

George Worlasi Kwasi Dor, a music professor at the University of Mississippi, has been awarded a fellowship by the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program to work with professors at the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria.

 

Dor, a native of Ghana who holds the McDonnell-Barksdale Chair of Ethnomusicology at UM, will travel to Nigeria in the summer of 2019 to collaborate with Adeoluwa Okunade and Marie Agatha Ozah on field research in ethnomusicology, curriculum development, and mentoring of graduate assistants and assistant lecturers.

 

“The research portion of the project will consider the ways indigenous knowledge in traditional ethnic music stays relevant to contemporary communities in Ghana and Nigeria,” Dor said. “This will build on research Dr. Ozah and I have collaborated on before, and we look forward to using the opportunity to train graduate students in ethnographic field research methods. Meet Dr Trebi-Ollenu, the Ghanaian-born team lead of NASA InSight space rover on Mars

On Monday, November 26, 2018, InSight, a spacecraft belonging to America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) landed the on Mars. Since the landing Africans in America, especially those with affiliations with Ghana, have also been celebrating.

This is because at the heart of the historic landing on Mars is the remarkable work of Ghanaian-born engineer, Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu, who is the team lead for InSight at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Trebi-Ollennu builds robotic components for planetary exploration, a dream that began as a young child in Ghana. He is in charge of the InSight mission’s robotic arm and hand.

The Obama Foundation has chosen nine African youths including  ex-Ghana midfielder King Osei Gyan to be part of the Leaders Africa program in Chicago. The nine were part of a group of 200 who met with the former president at a conference in South Africa recently.

The 2018 Open Doors report on international education has revealed that the United States hosted 1.09 million international students during the 2017/2018 academic year.This marks a 1.5 percent increase over the prior year. Leaders laud ex-UN chief Kofi Annan at Ghana state funeral
United in sorrow, world leaders and international dignitaries came to Ghana to pay their last respects to the late United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan who was honored with a state funeral, as many lauded him as an exceptional man and leader.

Ghanaians celebrate in Chicago

Ghanaians from across America gathered in Chicago for the annual Ghanafest event. The event was a grand success according to this report from ghanaweb

Ghana’s rich culture was on display over the weekend as thousands of Ghanaians and other nationalities thronged the Washington Park in Chicago for arguably the biggest Ghanaian outdoor event in North America, Ghanafest.

Chiefs representing various traditional areas from Ghana, adorned in their traditional regalia, showcased their rich culture amid drumming, dancing and singing from their areas.

This year’s event was unique as it marked the 30th anniversary of Ghanafest. As if to tell the world how this milestone is important, most of the traditional leaders were dressed in their most glamorous of outfits.

“I’ve been a part of Ghanafest for the past 30 years but this is the most amazing display of culture in so many years,” says Ruben Hadzid, a Chicago resident.

The event also saw the outdooring of the Ewe Queen of Chicago,nMama Hilda Adjaho Kuevi. To the Ewe community, this is a landmark feat as the community has been without a queen for a long time.

Mama Adjaho promised to help the chief and elders of the Ewe community to help bring leadership and support to the community

The event drew many Ghanaians from all over the world.

“This is Incredible. I’ve never seen anything like this before, this feels just like Ghana,” says Charlotte Abo who came from London, UK.

Aretha Awuku also came from Madrid, Spain and said: “This is one way we can show and teach our kids our values and culture.”

In this age of technology where Ghanaian kids born abroad do not go home regularly, “This will give them a feel of how things are done back home,” she added.

The event also brought together Ghanaian entrepreneurs who put their wares on display for sales. From restaurant owners, fashion designers and artists, there was something Ghanaian for everyone.
