Tony Eghan remembered as educator, athlete and proud Ghanaian-Nova Scotian

Members of Nova Scotia’s Ghanaian community are celebrating the life of a leader.

Tony Eghan was born in Ghana and lived much of his life in Nova Scotia. He died in March. Long before Eghan moved to Nova Scotia, he’d made a mark in Africa. In 1978, he coached Ghana’s Black Stars to win the Africa Cup of Nations.

Richie Laryea: Powerful Ghanaian-Canadian defender signs new deal with Toronto FC

Richie Laryea, a Canadian with Ghanaian heritage, has extended his contract with Toronto FC after a fruitful negotiations.  The 25-year-old signed a fresh contract with the Red and White lads following his exploits at the club in his debut season.

Vancouver: Ghanaian Vice President Bawumia receives rousing welcome

It was homecoming of sorts for Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawimia as he arrived at the Bear Creek Park in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver for this year’s GhanaFest July 20.

A graduate of Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University, Dr. Bawumia was met by an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 2,000, among them many old friends.

Canada-based Ghanaian donates ambulance to hospital at Drobo

A Ghanaian Chartered Accountant based in Toronto, Canada, Mr Ohene Amoako, has presented an ambulance worth US$30,000.00 to the 152-bed Saint Mary’s Hospital at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality in the Bono Region.

The ambulance will be used to convey patients who have been referred to other health facilities free of charge but the hospital has arranged that the patients will be charged GHC2.00 to be put in a pool to cater for the operational cost of the ambulance.

Presenting the vehicle to the hospital, a brother of the donor, Mr Gabriel Kyeremeh, explained that even though Mr Amoako considered a lot of options, it was finally agreed that the ambulance could help prevent avoidable deaths caused by the non-availability of an ambulance to convey referred patients to bigger health facilities.

Ghanaian Professor installed as Principal of University of Toronto – Scarborough

A Ghanaian Professor, Wisdom Tettey, has been installed as the Vice President and Principal of the University of Toronto-Scarborough in the largest city of Canada.
He is the first Black person to head the campus.
His installation took place at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto amidst academic pageantry with the blasting of Ghanaian traditional song in the background.
The ceremony was well attended by dignitaries and academia including the Vice Chancellor, academic staff, students and family members/representatives from the Toronto Ghanaian community.

Ghanaians in Toronto Donate computers to Aburi Presby Cluster of Schools

The Aburimma Association of Toronto, a group of Ghanaians based in Canada, has presented 20 computers, printers and other accessories worth $40,000 to the Aburi Presbyterian Cluster of Schools at Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

From Ghana to Canada, goalkeeper Kayza Massey looks to make a difference

Canada coach Rhian Wilkinson is proud of the diversity and accomplishments of her Canadian team at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay. The team includes 17-year-old Ghana-born goalkeeper Kayza Massey, adopted as a baby by Ottawa nurse Karen Massey. Kayza, who played for Ghana as a 15-year-old at the 2016 U-17 World Cup, switched international allegiance this year and is now wearing the Maple Leaf.
