The Share America Foundation Inc. recently announced another 2018 scholarship winner at Ringgold’s Patriot Hall. Musician/singer King Turyananuka, of Wake Forest, N.C., was selected as a Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship winner. He received a $1,000 scholarship. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has selected two recipients for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize, including Christian gynecologist Denis Mukwege, who has dedicated his life to caring for victims of rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Mukwege, nicknamed “Dr. Miracle” for his specialized procedures, received the award alongside Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi activist who survived being kidnapped and raped by ISIS members in Iraq. Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji scored a major breakthrough for herself and the popular Nigerian firm industry called Nollywoood when Netflix, the American streaming giant announced that they had purchased the worldwide rights to Nnaji’s movie, Lionheart, during the Toronto film festival.

Multimillionaire Patrick Awuah is a new generation of African entrepreneurs who have reversed the “African diaspora” and returned back to their native land and, as such, has disproved author Thomas Wolfe’s adage that you can’t go home again. Jacob Olupona, Harvard Divinity School Professor of African Religious Traditions, has won the 2018 Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion.  The award is given by the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and it “recognizes extraordinary contributions to the public understanding of religion by individuals whose work has a relevance and eloquence that speaks, not just to scholars, but more broadly to the public as well.” The award will be presented to Professor Olupona at the AAR Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 18, 2018 in Denver, Colorado.

A team of Nigerian schoolgirls will take a  share of a $50,000 prize for their pitch after the final event of the week-long World Pitch Summit in Silicon Valley. The team presented a pitch about an app that would help detect fake drugs, a perenial problem in africa.  FD-Detector (Fake Drug Detector) helps identify fake pharmaceutical drugs in Nigeria. The app leverages a drug’s barcode to verify its authenticity and expiration date.
