Kenyan Ambassador to US, Robinson Githae, Urges Kenyan Diaspora to join Saccos

By John Wanjohi

Outgoing Kenyan Ambassador to the United States Robinson Githae has urged Kenyans in the diaspora to join Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (Saccos).

Speaking during the 6th Annual General Meeting of the Kenya and USA Diaspora Sacco members in Boston, Githae said Kenyans living and working abroad can contribute more to the country’s economy by joining societies.

He also said joining Saccos would enable them to support development projects initiated in the country.

Ambassador Githae said there are a number of diaspora Saccos that Kenyans in different parts of the world can join to better their lives and improve the country’s economy.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora, who represented the Council of Governors (COG) during the meeting, echoed Ambassador Githae’s sentiments.

Governor Wambora challenged Kenyans abroad to partner with county governments in order to invest in programs geared towards achieving the government’s big four agenda.

Wambora said there are many opportunities in housing, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism that those in the diaspora can invest in.

Kenyans in the diaspora send home more than $2 billion annually but three-quarters of the money goes to charities and family support obligations such as school fees and medical bills.
