Mandela Washington Fellowship returns to App State in summer 2022

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has been selected as an Institute Partner for the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Beginning in mid-June, App State will host 25 of Africa’s bright, emerging Civic Engagement leaders for a six-week, on-campus Leadership Institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities and local community engagement.

Why Emeka Izeze, a Nigerian editor, loves the Department of Motor Vehicles in America

Emeka Izeze was sharing highlights about his time as a visiting scholar at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University as we drove along Highway 1 in Southern California on our way to a non-profit board meeting.

“I obtained my driver’s license in Cambridge,” said Izeze, the former editor-in-chief of The Guardian newspaper in Lagos, Nigeria. “And I have to tell you what was extremely impressive: the Department of Motor Vehicles!”

Trump, Kenyan leader Uhuru talk positive about US-Kenya trade deal

President Donald Trump and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta sounded positive notes Thursday about a future trade deal between their countries. Trump said the first such agreement between the U.S. and a nation in sub-Saharan Africa “probably” would happen.

Kenyatta arrived at the White House on a rainy afternoon for his second meeting with Trump. Trump stepped out beneath an awning to greet Kenyatta and escort him to the Oval Office, where they were to discuss trade and other issues.

Educational Institutions Across United States to Host Mandela Washington Fellows

Launched in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and embodies the United States’ commitment to invest in the future of Africa.  YALI was created in 2010 and is celebrating its 10th anniversary supporting young Africans as they spur economic growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.  Since 2014, nearly 4,400 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa have participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

Peter Nyong’o Father of Academy Award Winner Lupita Nyong’o visits Memphis and combines Movie Harriet & Kennedy, King & Obama

History happened in Memphis, Tennessee when a group of African dignitaries landed in Memphis, Tennessee headed by Professor Peter Nyong’o father Lupita Nyong’o.

Unknown to most Americans and Kenyans if it was not for a 26 year old African by the name of Tom Mboya who came from then “British East Africa” coming to America on August 15, 1956 there might not have been a Kenya, President Kennedy, President Obama and a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as we know him. Dr. King mention Nairobi, Kenya in his last speech in Memphis.

African fellows learn new business skills at the University of Iowa

Hailing from 19 countries, the 25 visitors were chosen through the six-week Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative, funded with a $150,000 U.S. State Department grant.

“I didn’t realize that being among these African leaders how I would feel so empowered. For me, they represent world history but also the future. We felt connected even though we hadn’t met before,” says Dr. Rev. Alex Gee. “There was something extremely powerful about people across the African diaspora [coming together]. We need to have more gatherings like this. It really moved me.”

On July 9, Dr. Gee and his team at Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development hosted the Mandela Washington Fellows of the African Studies Program at UW-Madison.

Somalia’s Prime Minister Hassan Khayre met with President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton at the White House on Wednesday. Khayre is seen as a key ally in the fight against the al Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab

“Pleased to have hosted Somali PM Khayre today. I congratulated him on Somalia’s economic reforms and urged sustained engagement on this front. We discussed ways to deepen the strong US-Somalia partnership on critical issues, including counterterrorism and regional stability,” Bolton wrote on Twitter Wednesday following their meeting.

The president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, addressed tensions and opportunities between the United States and Ghana, calling for a new dynamic in the relationship between the countries during a discussion at the University’s International House on Monday.

The event, which the Institute of Politics (IOP) and International House co-hosted as part of the latter’s Global Voices Program, was one of Akufo-Addo’s stops on a longer United States trip. In Chicago, Akufo-Addo had spoken with Chicago-based Ghanaians on the previous day and met with Mayor Rahm Emanuel on the day of his IOP talk.

Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged African leaders to use the enormous wealth the continent is endowed with to develop and empower their respective youth populations.

With Africa possessing the largest generation of young people in history, President Akufo-Addo indicated that: “I place great hope in their capacity to shape the future of Africa and make Africa the lion that it was meant to be.”
