Music, barbecue mark Kenya’s Madaraka Day in Minnesota

The sound of Afrobeat music could be heard against a backdrop of dancing men and women, in between the movements, small group conversations in Swahili and English took place as loud voices competed against the sound of music. In the same area children excitedly played volleyball, tag, and soccer. On the grill, the smell of nyama choma (grilled meat), filled the air for the annual Madaraka Day celebration .

Kenyan man, woman win Cleveland Marathon

A man and woman from Kenya have been crowned the winners of the Cleveland Marathon.

Edwin Kamaiyo, 33, made his American racing debut by overtaking two-time champion Philemon Terrer near the 24-mile mark and holding on for victory in the 42nd annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. His winning time was 2:22:02.

Kenya Airways inks deal with Delta Air Lines to expand operations in U.S.

Kenya’s flag carrier airline Kenya Airways said Friday it has reached an agreement with American airline Delta Air Lines to activate its codeshare with Delta in the United States and Canada.

Kenya Airways chief executive officer Sebastian Mikosz said the partnership will enable both the business and leisure travelers to enjoy greater connectivity and efficiency in 11 U.S. cities and four Canadian cities.

Many things surprised Connor J. Cobb in his first months working with high school graduates in Kenya—an East African country of nearly 50 million people—and one thing he did not expect to find was that some Kenyan runners he met in his travels would already know of his hometown of Falmouth and the Falmouth Road Race.

The 24-year-old member of the Falmouth Track Club, who graduated from Falmouth High School in 2013 and graduated last May from Wesleyan University with a degree in European history, has been working for the Kenya Scholar-Athlete Project, or KenSAP, since September.

He recently returned home for a month of college admissions visits for the nonprofit, including at his alma mater, before returning to Kenya.

The estimate by the Pew Research Centre is based on statistics developed last year by the World Bank
The United Kingdom was Kenya’s single-largest source of remittances, with $663 million sent home in 2017.
Kenyans living in the US, which ranked second, sent back $584 million.
Ghana and Senegal each accounted for about $2.2 billion in remittances.

Kenyans living abroad sent almost $2 billion (Sh200 billion) to their families and others in their homeland in 2017, a US data-analysis group said.

Long journey for American International College runner from Kenya

Leakey Kipkosgei, who came to American International College from Kenya, has had quite a career as a long-distance runner on coach Leo Mayo’s track and field team.

As a junior in 2018, he placed third in the steeplechase at the NCAA Division II nationals, and made the All-America first team.

Prior to that, he received male track athlete of the year honors after winning the 1,500 and steeplechase in the Northeast-10 meet.
