A Nigerian-born physician who is based in New York has donated one million dollars to his alma mata, the University of Ibadan in South West Nigeria. Dr. Philip Ozuah made the donation to the school during a fundraiser organised by the university.
In response to the announcement of the donation, the Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended Dr Philip Ozuah for his very generous donation of one million US Dollars to the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan hostel project.
Dabiri-Erewa, who put a personal call through to Dr Ozuah to appreciate his kind gesture, said the Commission is proud of him and his other colleagues who continuously give back to their country.
In an appreciative message by the Head of Media of the Commission, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the NIDCOM boss encouraged other Nigerians in the diaspora to emulate Dr Ozuah and remember to give back, thus contributing to national development.

“ I have just spoken to Dr Ozuah and he confirmed his donation. I join others to appreciate him for giving back to his alma mater and encourage others to emulate such generous gestures.”, Dabiri-Erewa said.
Dr Phillip Ozuah, a US based physician and alumnus of UI College of Medicine during a zoom fund raising single handedly donated $1,000,000 (One Million US Dollars only) to the Alumni Hostel Project.
It was a joyous mood at the Board Room of the College of Medicine University of Ibadan, on Monday August 1, when the Keynote Speaker and Fund raiser Dr Philip O. Ozuah, a 1980 Alumnus announced his donation of One Million US Dollars.
Ozuah, a Professor of Pediatrics, President and Chief Executive Officer of Montefiore Medicine, USA, gave the donation to serve as a catalyst for the construction of an ultra- modern Student Hostel estimated to cost about Two Billion and Five Hundred Million Naira. He joined other Alumni and Friends of the College of Medicine, who also made their own contributions.
Who is Dr. Ozuah
Dr. Ozuah is the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, the umbrella organization for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Montefiore Health System’s 13 member hospitals, 300 ambulatory sites, and 7.5 million patient encounters per year. A nationally recognized physician, leader, executive, researcher, teacher and author, Dr. Ozuah leads an organization with 10,000 physicians and 53,000 employees serving a diverse group of patients. A National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded researcher and award-winning educator, he also served as Professor and University Chairman of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief of Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM).
In his role, Dr. Ozuah has expanded access to care for underserved communities, recruited and cultivated outstanding talent, advanced programs of excellence, fostered innovations in medicine and science, and improved financial and operational performance by integrating care across a rapidly growing and evolving Montefiore system that sees over 7.5 million patient interactions a year with $8 billion in annual revenues. Under his leadership, Montefiore Health System’s specialties have ranked in the top 1 percent of the nation’s hospitals, and CHAM was recognized as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” according to U.S. News & World Report.
Dr. Ozuah also leads the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the nation’s premier centers for research, medical education and clinical investigation. Einstein receives more than $200 million in annual research awards from the NIH and is home to 800 M.D. students, 190 Ph.D. students, 120 students in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program, and 250 postdoctoral research fellows.
In addition to his research and clinical accomplishments, Dr. Ozuah has been recognized repeatedly by Modern Healthcare as one of the “Top Physician Executives” in the country. He has also been recognized nationally for excellence in patient care and medical education, including as an inductee into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a two-time recipient of the Academic Pediatric Association’s prestigious Helfer Award for Innovation in Medical Education.
Dr. Ozuah earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Southern California, and a PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He completed his Pediatric Internship and Residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore, and his Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Southern California School of Medicine
