Richie Laryea: Powerful Ghanaian-Canadian defender signs new deal with Toronto FC

Richie Laryea, a Canadian with Ghanaian heritage, has extended his contract with Toronto FC after a fruitful negotiations.  The 25-year-old signed a fresh contract with the Red and White lads following his exploits at the club in his debut season.

“Richie has been terrific since he joined us. He played a valuable role, both for Toronto FC, and the Canadian Men’s National Team last year,” said Toronto FC General Manager Ali Curtis.

“Off the field, Richie’s character and personality is tremendous. He earned this new contract in many ways, and we are excited for he, his family, and what he will bring to Toronto FC moving forward.” 

He joined Toronto FC after a successful preseason trial with the club in March 2019 where he made 28 appearances, scoring two goals with two assists. 

Laryea earned his first call-up to the Canadian Men’s National Team and his first cap on September 7, 2019 in a 6-0 victory over Cuba in a Concacaf Nations League match.  

Before his invitation to the senior national team of Canada, he was eligible to feature for Ghana. He has earned six caps in total for Canada.
